HMS Victory 1:72 - Caldercraft :)
Been building this ship on and off for like 4 years now.
My first attempt at ship building, is never gonna be perfect like all you dedicated builders, but i am pretty proud of what i have achieved so far with this build as the instructions are not that detailed and easy to follow.
The plans are impressive, instructions would have been easier if i knew some ship terminology - my fault for choosing an advanced build ;(

I have used a brighter yellow for the bands, not sure if this looks right, any input from you fellow builders might sway my mind to change to another lesser colour - i am not dedicated to getting everything right, just want something that is pleasing to the eye when this build is finally finished.

Hi Andy
Very warm welcome to the forum. Looking at your progress with the Caldercraft Victory, it looks like some of us will be asking you for hints and tips rather than the other way round. You are certainly well ahead of most of us who contribute to the forum.
Regarding your question about the yellow paint, technically the colour to choose would be yellow ochre which is a lot duller. The Admiralty paint range from Cornwall Model Boats amongst others, provides a whole set of water based paints in authentic navy dockyard colours from the C18th century.
Your model is looking really good but reminds me that it is a long term project -- 4 years wow!
However I think I will be matching you based on my progress so far.
One thing though it is a really good model/kit although as you say not exactly the best one to start with. I chose a top sail schooner for a first try some ten or so years ago and am just about at the stage of doing the masts and eventually the rigging. What I didn't realise was that a top sail schooner combines the need to understand both a square rig and a fore'n'aft rig so is far from simple!
Looking forward to seeing your contributions continue
Cheers

Re: HMS Victory 1:72 - Caldercraft :)
Thanks Mike, for the welcome
I originally had the Admiralty paints as advertised in the Manual for this build, after applying the Yellow Ochre, it just didn't have the effect i was looking for (WOW factor)
Then i legged it down to a Model Shop and browsed a line-up of yellow paints and came back with the one in the pics, it's a 'Lemon Yellow'
The Inner Bulwarks are painted in the Yellow Ochra as are the Masts.
Unfortunately i don't have any previous build photos of my build
Would have been interesting to see how long the build was taking by documenting every detail.
Had the kit for well over 4 years, but i have never worked on it continuously, one year i never touched it for around 9-10 months.
I cannot even guess at the true build time this has taken.
Takes around one hour to do one cannon build and that is not even the rigging that goes on them
Hardest part so far has to be the copper plating, a month of sticking them on, going out of alignment and taking them off again lol
I followed the instructions - working from Stern to Bow, at first i was doing a row at a time, but found this method would soon go out of alignment.
The best method i found was working with a 4 row system, working from Stern to Bow, each pass from Stern to Bow would increase by 4 rows
Doing this, i managed to do one side in half the time it took the other.
To stop them falling off i have now painted the whole hull with Admiralty Copper paint, it fills in the imperfections and the very few small gaps that do appear.
They give you two bags of these plates and i have used almost all of them on the hull and rudder, don't forget to open both bags and mixed together before using

Hi Andy, welcome to the forum.
Your progress is simply amazing for your first build, you are miles ahead of myself and others who are building this model here on the forum.
Like yourself this is more or less my first proper ship build, I did start the DeAgostini HMS Victory and I also have a 25+ year old Mamoli Victory kit that I have started and still plan to finish, but I always wanted the Caldercraft kit so my lovely wife treated me to it
Keep up the great work and I look forward to following your progress.

Re: HMS Victory 1:72 - Caldercraft :)
After looking at the stern for sometime i decided to hack the damn thing off and tidy it up abit
Still some work to be done of this, still touching the paint job up, then i need to glue all the pieces into position.
Click on pics to make them larger
Also been working on the Gratings and changing the colours of the stripes to spec colours
Still need to change the Gunports linings to Red Ochre.

And finally The Ship's Wheel and The Binnacle
Whilst i have the stern in pieces i was thinking of putting some lighting inside, run some kind of cable up the rudder hole, drill some well placed holes in the supports and thread led's through
As for the rest of the ship, there are two levels with Dummy strips for the cannons, in that case only illumination is possible for the upper decks
Being my first build, i haven't thought things through enough lol
Taking backward steps to correct build stages.
Found a stunning build on YouTube the other day - Here is the link for it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dk5DPcRVt_s&feature=related
I would be extremely happy if i get anything as near as good as this german guy has built, he even has little human figures placed around the build - makes it look very realistic
My next job i think will be lining the Bulwarks and the Companionway Guard Rails.
After that i may attempt to make some canons along with the rigging for each of them - i really hate doing this stage of the build - i left the build alone for several months last time i had to make some lol
Has anyone had dealings with Jotika for missing parts ?
The Metal Profiles are in 3 different profiles resulting in 6 meters, i only have 2 Profiles and 3 meters short of what i should have.
I haven't registered my kit with them, so obtaining parts maybe difficult

Hi Andy
Another interesting post!
With reference to parts from Jotika. I have to admit that the first thng I did was to register the kit with them. Several of us got the kit just after Christmas and we all found that there were minor discrepancies in terms of missing parts. I had a whole ply sheet missing and the glazing sheet. When I rang them the person I spoke to was totally interested and we had a long talk about overlapping copper plates etc. The missing parts arrived through the post very quickly as well with no problems.
I don't know if you are aware of the 'Modelspace' forum for the DeAgostini Victory model, amongst others. One of the chaps on that forum noticing that there were no boarding pikes to go round the masts, contacted Jotika who have made an etching set to the DEAg Victory scale especially for the DeAg modellers to bring their Victory closer to the Caldercraft spec.
So what I'm saying is -- give them a ring and I'm sure they will be able to help.

Build Status
I have not posted anything for such a long time now, as stated in my last post, i was about to make some new canons for the next stage, a job i have always hated
From that last post i have actually built nothing at all, the ship has been left standing in the corner of the room.............. grrrrrr on meeee.
It has taken a backwards step in fact, i have sanded down one side of the ship and i was going to re-plank it, that still has not happened.
All my time at present is set upon the ps3 console and one game - GT5 - i have always loved driving and this game has it all.
This is one reason this build has taken over 4/5 years to get to this stage, it has been left for months without any work undertaken, then all of a sudden i will put a month's work into it.
I will get back to it one day, but not sure when that will happen.
Just thought i would let you guys know why there has been a lack in posts from me.
Kind Regards, Andy

Hiya mate,
It's great to hear from you.
We all have other lives besides modeling and it's great that you have something that gives you just as much pleasure, just don't get caught speeding
we will have to hook up on the PS3 just as soon as I get a new one.
all the best
David
