We need your help!

Post  Captain Barbossa on Fri Feb 10, 2012 12:53 pm

It was only two years ago we decided to set up this community, it was a huge gamble as there are allot of other ship building communities out there, but we took the plunge anyway, and I am so pleased we did.
We now have over 200 members and some absolutely stunning ships being built, but we want more Very Happy as we have always said, everyone is welcome here, it doesn't matter how old you are as long as you share a passion for your hobby and you know how to treat other people with respect, it's no good having a community where everyone is trying to out do each other or start arguments, its all about the hobby and the passionate people behind it!

We are mostly a model shipbuilding community, but it doesn't have to end there, there are many other models out there and we would be proud to have them grace our community, so if your building planes, ships in bottles or anything else related to modeling, we would greatly appreciate you taking the time to share your work with us.

At the end of the day, this is our community, and we would like to make it a fantastic community but can only achieve this if we all work together, that includes ideas on how we can make this forum/community better, so I would really appreciate your advice and input, what would you like to see added to the site, would you like more modeling news, new ship kit information, a list of suppliers, model shops or something else? no idea is a bad idea, so please do not hesitate to have your say in what goes on here and how we can make it better.

best wishes
David

Hi Cap,

Love the pirates of the carribean by the way!

I have made a lot of models in my time. Mostly plastic, but a few years ago I splashed out on the correll version of the Greyhound. It is the first ime I have ever built a wooden ship ans it turned out better than I could have expected and was a real challenge. I have also recently finished the Airfix version of the h m s victory. It looks nice and I again surprised myself at the result as I have not really made models since i was a teenager. I am now nearing the big 50... I am actually trying to track down a detailed instruction to the H. M. S. Victory as i am going to attempt to make it out of matchsticks. I love a challenge. I am disabled and live on benefits so i don't have a great deal of money, so I thought that matchsticks would be a cheap way of building a ship from scratch. I even intend to make the guns and fittings out of matchsticks. I don't want to drag on so I will say bye for now.

Hiya Dave, and a huge warm welcome to the community.

I think most of us here started with plastic models, and to be honest I still have a few I am trying to build in between my Jotika HMS Victory, one is thew RMS Titanic and the other is test build for a local company, hopefully they will allow me to show it.

I also had a passion for match models at one point, but I really do like the new architect kits, no more cardboard to glue to, but not many ship kits available yet, but you never know, they might start introducing them in the near future (Fingers Crossed)

If you are considering building the HMS Victory out of matches, I would suggest you get the book Anatomy of a ship HMS Victory that book has loads of images, it's what I am using now as a reference guide while building my Jotika HMS Victory, well worth the money, but I would advise you stay away from ebay, some people on there are trying to charge £100 for a £29 book.

anyway, it's great to meet you and thanks for joining our community.

all the best

David

hi, and welcome dave,I agree with all that have been said, and a good way to start the victory in match sticks is to get the card victory by shipyard,it is 1/98 scale, and makes a good base for match sticks,I started one a few years ago and is in the loft somewhere, but with the shipyard victory, you have all the components for patterns, and it is a very comprehensive kit in it self.you can get it at www.marcle-models.co.uk. I think thats the right address.anyway good luck and best wishes for the task.

Hi Dave

Following up on what has been said -- I would strongly recommend Anatomy of Nelson's Ships, if you are planning your own Victory model, in matchsticks or anything else!

I've just checked and Amazon are currently selling it for about £26.00, instead of the £40 price. There are also e-bay offers on older copies at around the same price(£26 to £30)

Let me add to what Karl has said - Good luck whatever you decide to do and keep us posted!

Cheers

Mike T
