Armed Transport Bounty

Post  zeptrader on Sun Nov 21, 2010 10:26 am

Just thought I'd add my Bounty build, its taking forever, but as I know have my shed sorted I can begin again, I'm just getting my head around where I left off 2 years ago and whilst waiting for the Victory parts this may as well be a good place as any.

***Uploading progress pics******

I'm working on the masts and yards ect, Ive moved away from the original parts that were supplied with the partworks (Del Prado) and made my own with the help of John McKays great book. I simple scanned the drawings andmade sure the size was correct from the magazine, shaped and sanded. (see pics soon)

Every thing that I'm doing now Ive never done before so its slow steps and a lot of thinking:)

I hope you enjoy this build, one thing I aim to do is not get too stressed out with it, its only a hobby[flapper]

Whilst your waiting for my pics mabe you would like to view my original blog I started.

Here is my little video I made some years back of the progress -

Im transfering this build over so please bear with me fellas.

This is where the pictures start, I re made the deck complete, the parts in the kit were in 3 parts and just naff. All I did was to measure the 3 parts and draw around and cut out of thin ply, then sanded and checked it fitted (it did..phewy)

I bought some very thin wood for the planking and started to do what they call a 3 butt shift planking ...

Then I used some danish oil for the deck, just rub it on gentle with a cloth, no varnish.
As you maybe able to see the treenail holes, I simply drilled those.

As you can see from this picture it has a nice warm glow to it, the planking was hell, I'll leave that for another time.

The next step was to arrange the deck, the pictures can do most of the talking.

This is the inside, still yet to add all the goings on here:)

The grating were part of the kit, I just added the surrounds from sratch, the bulwark side were added as well from McKays book and various other wonderful models, I though it added a nice touch. The hatch surround was scratch built.

The area where the ship's boat sits again was scratch built, I did however end up painting the hooks black.

The ship's boat.

Some more progress during a rather hot summer 2007

I started the stern area by adding details that was'nt in the kit.

the rear end, oh how that gives me goose bump to think of the planking.

Again a lot was used from the kit, but much more replaced from scratch building.

The binnacle area

You can see the ships boat and how banana shaped it is, well my first ever attempt and well, I know better next time.

Now for some rigging of sorts, this was added with refference from McKays book. Damn fiddley but well worth it.

Not the standard/historic look but you know I love it, it adds a little flair and personal touch -

This was hard, I added some more details that the kit didnt have.

Ignore the furled sail attempt, its wrong and needs re doing at some point.

Im now onto the mast's, as mentioned in another post I didnt like the kit supplied mast (dowl) over the years it sort of bent out of shape, so with advice from another forum I attaempted to make my own.

My first attempt was to take this photo and try to use this as a guide, but as you can imagine the size would be wrong.

I then scanned the book (part needed) and with the magazine giving the correct size of dowl to use I scaled this image in photoshop and printed it out.

I marked the square stock and marked the tappering, sanded to 8 sided, then 16, by then it look pretty much circular, just the fine tunning.

I think this works for me, right now I'll be making the cleats.
I dont see any reason this idea could not be used to the Victory, IF they dont supply the instructions or decent wood for the mast ect

Today work was small and slow, getting back into it again, I needed to add the cleats on the yards.

Cut the wood needed to 3mm

Used the NEW TOOL! easy stuff to cut a very small cleat

Put the yard in the NEW JIG! easy again, to hold and have hands free.

Glued on and ready to shape a little more

These are small, I should add a coin for scale but I'm sure you can get the idea.

This is the McKay plan, pretty close.

These small cleats and things like it are small enought to use scrap wood, sve them all, even if you thinks it aint worth saving you will be surprised.

This is a pivital moment for me, first scratch built yard and booms, and rigging it of sorts, I know the picture is dark but soon as I've fininshed it I'll take some better shots during the day, just done this about 5mins ago.

The yard was painted with Indian Ink, 2 coats, I like the way it looks, the boom is just stain, pretty much the same as the main boat.
The yarn is the supplied stuff from Del (wash you mouth out) Prado, the idea's for this was really from McKays book, I'm happy with it.

Oh and thanks for all your comments, it really does help even now, thanks:)

I completely re made the deck, the kit parts were in 3 parts and naff.
I cut the new decking in one hit and bought some nice planking, I think yes it could do with some chalking but too late now really.

Today progress has been another first, I'm working on the mast tops, again the kit supplied are bad beyond anything, so after speding the evening think about what options are open to me (making grating did'nt go too well) I came up with this -

The first picture I think really shows a good first attempt at the topmast.

This is showing the kit supplied on the right compared to what I've spend most of the day doing (Left) No brainer really?

With this I've just placed the cheeks (dry fitted) to see if my measurements were correct..Yep!

A side view with the other mast (scratch built) placed in situe, I think it needs sanding down to thin it out a little more, not much.

You can see in this picture the kit supplied parts, I think I may re do those and add more, may as well as Ive done this much.

I traced onto grapht paper the original part and stuck that to a piece of scrap wood, with my proxxon saw I cut some very thin strips of wood, may under 1mm. With some nails I moulded the thin strip around the original piece and nailed to hold it in place, soon as that was sun dryed for about 20mins I removed the original kit part and added another thin strip this time inside the frist (so as not too make the mast top bigger (width)), I built this up over 5 thin strips.
When this was dryed I made the 3 side. After a little sanding I added the cross beams one at a time with super glue, seems to work. one of this size to do and a smaller one.
