Mamoli HMS Victory 1:90 Scale.

Hi all, I have decided to do a build log for the above kit, it was given to me by my father in law who has had it in his stash since the 1980's!!!

I am a complete novice when it comes to model ship building, to date I have done the usual plastic cars/plane kits so would appreciate any and all advice along the way.

So this kit is going to be my first steps into this hobby, some may think that this kit is not a very good choice for someone's first kit, but I will do my best.

Jay

Below are a few pictures of the main frames after they were put together, it was quite hard keeping all the parts of the frame square while the glue was setting, but the whole process was made much easier once I built the hull cradle.

I apologise for my lack of nautical terms, but I am doing my best to learn then as I go along!!!

The following pic shows work starting on the Gunports.

I have been having a few problems with the Gunports as the pre-cutout slots that they slide into have been put into the wrong place and do not line up with the deckline Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Here is a pic of the planking on the upper Gundeck, I decided to put the wooden strips on as single strips and then to mark out the planking pattern and then score the lines with a sharp blade to get the individual planks I just have a few places that need to be finished off and then its back to the gunports.

The gunports have now been added, the slots that the gunports are ment to slot into are pre cut by the factory but they did not line up at all!!!

In the end after much head scratching I decided to not use the pre cut slots and lined them up myself and stuck them to the bulkheads using epoxy resin.

There are a couple more gunports to add, but all in all I think that they turned out really well They all line up nicely with the deckline and all fit flush with the outer planks, I am more then happy with the results!!!

Looking very good so far Jay. My first attempt with wood was Deags Victory, now cancelled. Then both versions of the Black Pearl!! Not sure if there is an 'easy' start into this if you have never built one before, but slow and steady seems to be the best way!! pirat Keep the pics comming, looking excellent so far!! pirat pirat

Hi Again Jay

I should have chosen my Father-in-law more carefully!! Mine never had anything like that stowed away.

I seem to remember your build log on the DeAg forum, so it's great to see it over here as well. Gun ports seem to be a big problem when designing boat kits, the Caldercraft solution with the plywood formers and pre-cut holes seems to be the best idea to me. I'm just impatient to get to the stage of lining and planking round the ports, but am still only at best a quarter of the way through the first hull planking.

Looking forward to seeing more of your Mamoli build if you can keep your hands off your Caldercraft Victory!!

Hi Jay,

Looks spot on upto now. The kit looks quite good for an 80's kit aswell. Been stored well.

Like the guys have said , any problems we are all here one of us is bound to know of a way or an answer for you.

Hello, thanks very much, I agree totally with you about the gunport mouldings, I spent many a night with a needle file trying to make them look better. All in all the kit is not to bad, it just really needs better instructions. Have you any pics of your Mamoli?

Hello, thanks very much.
I was also doing the Deag Victory, not a bad build I liked the idea of a group of people all building the same ship at the same time and comparing notes. I have also now cancelled mine as my wife is treating me to the CC HMS Victory Very Happy
I have enjoyed looking at your Black Pearl logs and would very much like to try this ship myself.

Hi Mike, yes I was gobsmacked when he gave it to me, it is a very good kit except for the build instructions are very poor. Yes it was on the Deag site and I thought I would post it here aswell.
The gunports were a real nightmare to get them to look even remotely right as the pre cut slots for them were way out of place, I much prefer the deag and CC way of doing them.
Yes it will be very hard to keep my hands off the CC kit when it arrives, I will probably use what I learn whilst building the CC kit and transfer it to the Mamoli kit Very Happy
How is your build comming along? Cant wait for an update.

Hi Chris, thanks very much.
Yes the kit has been stored well, my father in law has converted his loft into a sort of model storing place and it is like walking into a model shop, all of his kits are stored on shelves.
